TikTok Notes starts rolling out as a new rival to Instagram

Image
Illustration by Nick Barclay / The Verge TikTok has started rolling out its Instagram rival, TikTok Notes, to select Android and iOS users “for download and limited testing in Australia and Canada.” A tweet announcing the launch , as well as the App Store and Google Play listings, showed off some official images of the app that offer insights about how it works for those of us who don’t have access yet. In them, we see that you can write up headlines for images above your captions, which is a feature Instagram doesn’t natively offer. Image: TikTok The homepage also seems to be divided into two sections, with a separate page where you can view posts from people you follow and another “For You” page. It’s organized a bit like Pinterest’s homepage but with a smaller, two-column grid. It’s not clear whose posts are highlighted here, but it’s likely accounts similar to the ones you follow TikTok thinks you might like. Besides these small t

Instagram will blur nudes in messages sent to minors

The new protections for blurring nude images will start rolling out globally in the coming weeks. | Image: Meta Instagram is preparing to roll out a new safety feature that blurs nude images in messages, as part of efforts to protect minors on the platform from abuse and sexually exploitative scams. Announced by Meta on Thursday, the new feature — which both blurs images detected to contain nudity and discourages users from sending them — will be enabled by default for teenage Instagram users, as identified by the birthday information on their account. A notification will also encourage adult users to turn it on. These efforts follow longstanding criticism that platforms like Facebook and Instagram have caused harm to their youngest users, from harming children’s mental health and body image, to knowingly platforming abusive parents and creating a “marketplace for predators in search of children” The new feature will be tested in the coming weeks accordi

TikTok is getting closer to launching an Instagram rival

Illustration by Nick Barclay / The Verge TikTok is planning to release a new photo-sharing app that could take on Instagram. In a notification sent to users , TikTok says it’s launching “a new app for photo posts” called TikTok Notes, as reported earlier by TechCrunch . The notification says it will share “existing and future public TikTok photo posts” to TikTok Notes while also giving users the ability to opt out. A new photo.tiktok.com URL ( archived version ) spotted by TechCrunch also briefly appeared online with a prompt to open a post in the TikTok Notes app. Judging by the image included on the site, it looks like you’ll be able to write a caption alongside your photo, too. In a statement to TechCrunch , TikTok says it’s “exploring ways to empower our community to create and share their creativity with photos and text in a dedicated space for those formats” but didn’t say when it plans to release the app. The Verge reached out to TikTok with a r

Meta will require labels on more AI-generated content

Image
Illustration by Nick Barclay / The Verge Meta is updating its AI-generated content policy and will add a “Made with AI” label beginning in May, the company announced . The policy will apply to content on Instagram, Facebook, and Threads. Acknowledging that its current policy is “too narrow,” Meta says it will start labeling more video, audio, and image content as being AI-generated. Labels will be applied either when users disclose the use of AI tools or when Meta detects “industry standard AI image indicators,” though the company didn’t provide more detail about its detection system. The changes are informed by recommendations and feedback from Meta’s Oversight Board and update the manipulated media policy created in 2020. The old policy prohibits videos created or edited using AI tools that make a person say something they didn’t but doesn’t cover the wide range of AI-generated content that has recently flooded the web. “In the last four years, and partic

WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook are back up and running after outages

Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge WhatsApp went down worldwide on Wednesday afternoon, impacting the 2 billion users of the messaging service. Users started experiencing issues connecting to WhatsApp in multiple countries just after 2PM ET today, with the service stuck on “connecting” for many. Users can still send messages, but they weren’t delivered until WhatsApp came back online. A status page for Meta’s business APIs was updated to note an outage impacting service on the APIs for connecting to WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram starting at 2:10PM ET. As of 4PM ET, the issues seemed to be resolved for most of us in the US; and as of 4:45PM ET, the status page confirmed things should be fixed. The Verge contacted Meta about the issues, but we have not received a response yet. For other Meta services like Facebook, Instagram, and Threads, many people were reporting issues trying to view recent posts or create new posts on the services, but now, tho

How to mix politics with your Threads

Image
Illustration: The Verge You can’t really blame Meta’s executives for wanting to limit the amount of political yelling on Instagram and Threads. That stuff can get pretty toxic. As a result, both of Meta’s social networks now limit what Meta terms “political content” from people you are not following . However, if you are a Threads or Instagram user and you want to be exposed to posts “likely to mention governments, elections, or social topics that affect a group of people and/or society at large” (which is how Meta describes it), you can still do it by opting in to political content . The only thing that may be a little confusing is that you have to opt in within the Instagram app — even if you are mainly using Threads. Here’s how: On your mobile device, go to the Instagram app. Go to your profile and select the three parallel lines in the upper right. Scroll down to Content preferences > Political content . Select Don’t limit political content from
