The OG App, an ad- and Reels-free Instagram clone, is pulled from the App Store

Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge An app appealing to the nostalgia of an Instagram without Reels and recommendations was pulled from the App Store just as developers say it was taking off. The OG App allows users to log in with their Instagram account and browse without ads, recommendations, and Reels — increasingly obtrusive features on Instagram that have caused widespread pushback from users. The app’s name captures the same sentiment: many users miss the old Instagram. But just a day after the app officially launched, it was pulled from the App Store on Wednesday, Engadget reports . On Twitter, the OG App creators said the app got 10,000 downloads and was climbing the rankings before it was removed. Yesterday night, after we received 10,000 downloads, were #50 on the App Store, and had an average rating of 4.1 stars, Apple took us off the App Store. Users chose OG over Instagram because we listened to them and built what they wanted. — The OG A

Meta’s new switcher puts all of your Facebook profiles and finstas in one place

Image: Meta Meta is testing a new way to add and switch between your accounts on Instagram and Facebook by integrating its Accounts Center into the apps. The features should help make things easier for anyone who constantly bounces between various accounts on the two apps or people who have a lot of Instagram profiles to separate their Online Brand, personal life, and business. The new account switcher for Facebook and Instagram will show you all the accounts and profiles you’ve added to the Accounts Center . While Instagram has let you switch between different profiles for years , the new system lets you throw Facebook accounts in the mix, making it easier to jump over to Facebook if you need to do something on that app. It’ll also show you some details about notifications for each account — if you’re browsing your personal account, the switcher will show you if there are comments or other notifications to check out on your other accounts. We’re introduci

Meta ordered to pay Voxer $175 million for violating live-streaming patents

Meta has been ordered to pay almost $175 million in fines to app developer Voxer for violating live-streaming patents | Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Meta has been ordered to pay Voxer — creator of the Walkie Talkie messaging app — over $174 million in damages after a jury in Texas federal court found the social media giant guilty of violating two live-streaming patents with Facebook Live and Instagram Live. The patents in question were developed by Voxer co-founder Tom Katis, a US Army veteran seeking to fix the shortcomings he experienced in battlefield communications after his combat unit was ambushed in Kunar Province in 2003. Katis and his team began developing communications solutions in 2006, resulting in new technology that enabled the transmission of live voice and video communications. Voxer was then formed in 2007, and the Walkie Talkie app was launched in 2011. Meta approached Voxer following the launch of Walkie Talkie, looking to co

Instagram knows it has a Reels problem

Image
Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge Instagram’s attempt to take on TikTok has cost the platform millions of dollars, countless app updates, and a week-long firestorm involving the most famous people on the planet, mad about the direction it was going in. And so far, Instagram hasn’t caught up to the company it’s chasing. An internal Meta document obtained by The Wall Street Journal paints the picture of Instagram struggling to court creators as Reels engagement falls. Compared to 197.8 million hours users spend on TikTok a day, Instagram users are spending 17.6 million watching Reels — less than a tenth, according to the document titled, “Creators x Reels State of the Union 2022.” The report, published in August, said Reels engagement had fallen 13.6 percent over the last four weeks, and “most Reels users have no engagement whatsoever,” according to The Wall Street Journal . A major issue for Instagram is the lack of original content on Reels — nearly

Instagram begins testing ‘reposts’

Instagram users would reshare posts onto their feeds. | Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge If you can believe it, Instagram is testing a new feature that mimics other social networks. TechCrunch reports Instagram confirmed tests of “reposts” to bring someone else’s content onto your own timeline. It’s similar to Twitter’s retweets or the kind of reshares that are common on Tumblr and Facebook and are also in testing on TikTok . TechCrunch writes the “repost” feature was spotted by Matt Navarra, a social media consultant who posted images in a Twitter thread on Wednesday . However, Alessandro Paluzzi noticed it in development back in May , showing Instagram has been working on it for a while. Instagram removes PornHub’s account as pressure from campaigners grows

Image
Photo by Nikolas Kokovlis/NurPhoto via Getty Images Instagram has removed the official account for PornHub as pressure from campaigners against the site grows. The news was first reported by Variety , which notes that at the time of its removal, PornHub’s Instagram account had some 13.1 million followers and 6,200 posts. The account posted safe-for-work content that promoted PornHub’s various videos and performers. PornHub still operates popular accounts on other social media platforms like Twitter. It’s not clear exactly why Instagram’s parent company Meta removed the account, though screenshots shared by anti-PornHub campaigner Laila Mickelwait suggest the account was taken down for violating Instagram’s community guidelines. The Verge has reached out to Meta for confirmation and details, and will update this story if we hear back.
